Cambridge Presents 2016 Manufacturing Partnership Award to Krispy Kreme

Cambridge, MD (October 18, 2016) -- Cambridge Engineered Solutions, the world’s largest manufacturer of metal conveyor belts, presented its inaugural “Partners in Outstanding Equipment Manufacturing” (POEM) award to Krispy Kreme at the International Baking Industry Exposition (IBIE) on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 in Las Vegas. Developed to recognize exceptional industry partnerships, the award heralds Cambridge’s 50-year alliance with the internationally-renowned doughnut maker and was presented by Crystal Willey, baking industry sales director, to Patrick Betson, Krispy Kreme’s director of equipment manufacturing.

“For five decades, Cambridge has worked with Krispy Kreme to ensure that its signature glazed donuts are perfectly iced, cooled and packaged,” said Willey. “We are honored that our Sani-Grid® metal belt has been their trusted conveyor belt of choice in more than 1,000 locations.”

Krispy Kreme exclusively specifies Cambridge’s patented Sani-Grid® stainless steel mesh belt because it withstands the high temperatures and corrosive sugars needed to cook, glaze and cool one billion donuts annually. Doughnuts require a tough processing environment as high amounts of sugar are abrasive to conveyor belts and fats used in cooking are difficult to remove during sanitation.

“Krispy Kreme’s reputation as a worldwide leader is the result of an unwavering commitment to quality, taste and presentation,” said Betson. “Our glazed doughnuts are made using specialty equipment designed with Cambridge’s Sani-Grid® conveyor belts. These long-lasting superior metal belts help ensure our equipment can meet the demand – and high standards – our doughnuts require.”

In the mid-60’s, Krispy Kreme pioneered the waterfall icing machine, an innovative process to glaze hundreds of doughnuts a minute emerging from the deep fryer along a moving conveyor. The proprietary application required a durable metal belt that could move the doughnuts seamlessly from cooking to glazing to cooling. Krispy Kreme’s engineers found that Sani-Grid met their requirements and Cambridge’s Maryland–based operation could fabricate, deliver, and service the critical conveyor component to its growing number of company owned stores and franchises.

Presented on the final day of IBIE before customers, equipment manufacturers, and representatives of both companies, Willey stated that she’s had the honor and privilege working with Krispy Kreme for 25 years, adding, “They not only produce the highest quality products, they are known for having an outstanding team and work environment.”
