Cambridge Announces 2016 Scholarship Recipients

Eastern Shore manufacturer awards $1,000 scholarships to Patrick Galeta and Gavin Mowery 

Cambridge, MD (June 7, 2016) – Cambridge, a Rexnord business and Maryland-based manufacturer of metal conveyor belts and architectural mesh systems, today awarded two Dorchester county graduates its annual scholarships. Designed to recognize and support graduating high school students pursuing careers in technology and engineering, the $1,000 awards were presented to Gavin Mowery, 18 of Cambridge and Patrick Geleta, also 18 of Taylor’s Island at a June 7 reception hosted at the company’s headquarters.

“Cambridge is honored to support the dreams and aspirations of deserving Dorchester students through these two scholarships,” said Tracy Tyler, President and CEO. “Through our Bill Neild Engineering Scholarship and Cambridge’s Technology Scholarship, we are investing in the future of our community and our company.”

The Neild Engineering Scholarship was founded to support aspiring engineers in honor of Bill Neild, a 31-year Cambridge employee who passed away in 2012. This year’s recipient is Patrick Geleta, CSDHS class president and first in his 162-student graduating class. He has a 4.4 GPA and earned straight A’s throughout high school. Patrick will attend the University of Maryland’s Engineering Honors program at its flagship College Park campus. He was a member of CSDHS’s varsity swim team all four years and cross country varsity as an upper classman. In addition to being an active volunteer with the Taylor’s Island Volunteer Fire Department, Patrick served as Dorchester County’s student page for the 2016 Maryland General Assembly.

In his scholarship application, Geleta wrote, “I choose engineering because I hope to be on the cutting edge of innovation to help bolster the prosperity of my community through lasting improvements in design. We need to improve the world we live in and engineering is a good start.”

Gavin Mowery, Cambridge’s Technology Scholarship recipient, also graduated from CSDHS. He will attend the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport Pennsylvania and study Welding Fabrication Engineering. Gavin plans to specialize in underwater welding and eventually attend the Hobart Institute to become a certified welding inspector. While a student at the Dorchester Career and Technology Center (at CSDHS), he was a member of the National Technical Honor and the American Welding societies. Gavin played varsity soccer and lacrosse and was active with the theater club’s light and sound crew. While in school, he worked at Portside Restaurant and volunteered for the IRONMAN and Eagleman triathlons.

Requiring both technical skills and education, Mowery chose a career that allows him to travel the world and earn a good income doing what he enjoys. In his scholarship essay, he cited numerous industries and welding applications including shop fabrication, shipbuilding and construction.

“The annual scholarships are one of many community initiatives Cambridge International is proud to support to help build a workforce to carry our business into the future,” said Heather Hillaert, Director of Human Resources.

Hillaert chairs the company’s committee responsible for reviewing and selecting the scholarship recipients. Students apply each spring through the Dorchester County Public Schools Common Scholarship Application. Candidates for Cambridge International’s scholarships must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate academic and community leadership, and submit an essay describing their career goals.
